Popular morning driving show presenter for Munghana Lonene FM, a Polokwane-based SABC radio station, has died.

Hlekani Mabasa, popularly know as DJ Hlekz, died on Sunday night in a road traffic accident on the N1 road near Naboomspruit.

The accident happened after the tyre of the car Mabasa was travelling in burst and lost control. It then collided with an oncoming vehicle before rolling several times. She died on the scene.

Mabasa, 21, had earlier attended her cousin's graduation party in Alexandra, Johannesburg.

She was alone in her Renault Clio when it overturned and disrupted traffic flow.

Mabasa joined the station in July 2005 where she hosted the programme Xitimela xa nimixo - meaning morning train, between 3am to 6am on weekdays.

Station manager Mandla Soko yesterday described Mabasa's demise as a sad loss.

"Mabasa was a hard working, highly committed and talented individual whose skills in radio were immeasurable.

"She possessed very rare media skills," said Soko.

Mabasa would have celebrated her 22nd birthday on Friday.

Soko said they had big plans on how they could use Mabasa in key station programmes in the near future.

For purposes of continuity at the station, management had brought in Morris Sibuyi to host the programme for now.

A permanent replacement would be found after Mabasa's funeral had taken place.

Mabasa was born at Bungeni village outside Louis Trichardt on December 14 1985. Her parents moved to Alexandra where she was raised.

"It is such an irony that Mabasa was born on December 14 and will be buried on the same date.

"Her family threw a big party on her 21st birthday last year and were hoping to see more of her," said Soko.

Mabasa, a breadwinner in the family, will be buried on Saturday at her home village of Bungeni.
