The principals from 32 schools situated mostly in urban areas of KwaZulu-Natal face disciplinary action after failing to submit their stationery and textbooks orders.
The provincial department of education yesterday expressed disgust at the "principals' ignorance" despite numerous reminders for them to place their orders.
Yesterday, Ina Cronje, the provincial education MEC, said while they won't be fired, they will still be dealt with seriously. The principals are from the non-section 21 schools in poverty- stricken areas. "We pulled out all the stops to make sure those textbooks and exercise books are delivered to schools at the first bell when schools reopen in the province on January 16.
"School principals were given five months and countless reminders, but 32 of the schools have not placed their orders at all," she said.
She said the department was positive that they will be able to deliver more than 95 percent of the stationery and textbooks on time.
"The department will have achieved an almost 100 percent delivery of textbooks to non-section 21 schools when schools reopen,' she said.
National Teachers Union spokesman Musa Gumede said it was too early to praise the department.
