KaNyamazane residents are still reeling with shock after Kintane Antonio Tembe, 34, and his wife, Alice Thandi Ntimbane, 32, hanged themselves in two separate incidents at the weekend.
A neighbour who did not want her name published said Ntimbane from Dukuduku in Mtubatuba, northern Zululand, had been sick for a long time.
Her husband had quit work to look after her.
"On Saturday, the couple's teenage sons arrived at my home and told me that their father had gone to work and had sent them to ask me to come and pray for their sick mother," she said.
But when they arrived back home, they found their mother hanging from the roof.
She was already dead.
Police spokesman Captain Jabulani Mdletshe said the boys told them that their father had stopped working at the Wiseman Farm in Umfolozi for a short period. But their mother pleaded with him to go back to work.
"She pleaded with him to go back to work, saying that if he lost his job they would suffer as a family. On Saturday, he then left for work with the intention of asking for more leave days."
After their mother's death, the boys sent an SMS to their father informing him of the incident.
"He rushed back home. The neighbours stayed with him the whole night trying to comfort him. On Sunday, they gave him water to bath. He went to bath in the nearby bush.
"After taking a bath he was seen going behind the trees. They thought he was going to the toilet. When he took longer to return, neighbours went searching for him but could not find him until one of them decided to call him on his cellphone. The phone rang deep in the forest," said Mdletshe.
They went towards where the phone was ringing and found him hanging from a tree. He was already dead.
The couple was originally from Mozambique. Their bodies were taken to the Mtubatuba mortuary.
Mtubatuba detectives are investigating cases of suicide and no foul play is suspected.
Mdletshe said the two boys are in the care of relatives.
