High-level security for ANC

It's all systems go at the University of Limpopo's Turfloop campus as final preparations for the forthcoming ANC national conference gets under way.

At Mankweng and the surrounding areas yesterday, scores of curious people were lining up the streets to witness the wrapping up of the final preparations.

University management confirmed yesterday that they surrendered the institution to the ANC, which will choose its leadership for the coming five years as well as discuss the political road forward.

Yesterday, reporters who were curious to get a feel of the atmosphere inside the campus, were denied entry, probably because security measures were put in place.

A huge marquee at the university's Oscar Mpetha Stadium was being constructed.

And the road between Polokwane and Mankweng was awash with police and traffic vehicles monitoring the road leading to the campus.

About 4000 delegates are expected at the conference.

No one from the university was prepared to speak to the media about the actual preparations for the conference.

Three SANDF Casspirs were seen arriving, loaded with army personnel, apparently to provide further security for conference delegates.

Limpopo police spokesman Senior Superintendent Motlafela Mojapelo said yesterday that more than 1000 police officers would be deployed at areas next to the campus to make sure that the delegates and everyone else at the conference would be safe.

Mojapelo said: "We have also declared the area around Mankweng a gun-free zone.

"We are encouraging all gun owners to leave their weapons at home during the duration of the conference.

"No one will be allowed into the venue or to move anywhere around the area with a firearm," Mojapelo said.
