Free State to steal thunder

Free State will be a beehive of boxing activities come 2008.

It is where the boxing fraternity will gather for the Baby Champs on January 11, the Boxing SA yearly awards on February 16 and for the convention the following day.

Bongani "Mr Fix-It" Khumalo, Boxing SA chief executive, said the Free State government will not only host these events, but will also sponsor them - courtesy of the broad-minded MEC for sport, Ace Magashule.

Khumalo, who has changed the face of local boxing since taking over the hot seat in June, said the awards were to honour excellence in various categories of achievers while the convention is the platform to drum up ideas that will shape the future of boxing.

These are two big events on the Boxing SA calendar.

It will be the first time that they take place outside Gauteng and in February.

They always take place in January.

Khumalo said because of certain logistical changes the events were deferred to the middle of February. The rotation system will afford other provinces the opportunity to host them.

"It's our fervent hope that these events will not only be memorable but will also have a lasting impact in the Free State province, and rekindle interest in boxing as a sport and unearth talent, which is currently untapped," he said.

"Our gratitude goes to the Free State government, in particular the MEC for sport, Ace -Magashule, for accepting to host and sponsor this event."
