In the past few months we have witnessed tensions and divisions in the ANC. As an ANC member, I agree with Archbishop Desmond Tutu that delegates should not elect a leader who will shame us.
I do not have anything against Jacob Zuma. He is a strong leader who cares about ordinary people.
But we cannot deny that his image has been tainted and his comments on safe sex and women's sexuality during his rape trial shamed and outraged many people who believed in him. The ongoing corruption investigation also doesn't do much for his image.
President Thabo Mbeki has been an exceptional leader of the ANC and an outstanding president of South Africa. He has played a significant role in African unity and has boosted our economy to new heights to ensure that the country remains the powerhouse of the continent.
Mbeki continues to promote unity in the polluted political climate of the ANC, caused by the succession battle. And he has been an ambassador for gender equity and women empowerment. He definitely has my vote as ANC leader and the president of the country for another term if the congress does not nominate a compromise candidate. The ANC claims to have an abundance of good leaders, but I have my doubts.
The succession battle has made our leaders lose focus of ANC traditions. Cyril Ramaphosa, Tokyo Sexwale and Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma would be good compromise candidates.
