Police have still not made any discernable progress in rearresting self-confessed child rapist Paul Mofokeng who has been on the run for 27 days.

Mofokeng, 26, escaped from the Protea magistrate's court after his rape case was postponed for a high court date.

He also goes by the name Vusi Zwane.

Prior to his escape, Mofokeng confessed to kidnapping and repeatedly raping a six-year-old Mofolo, Soweto, girl.

Police spokesman Sergeant Sanku Tsunke said that in the public's view police might be taking too long to rearrest him, but they are making considerable progress.

"We are searching for him everywhere and the public has been calling us with information."

Yesterday a Good Samaritan, Carolyn Neser, donated a quilt and educational toys to the girl. "After reading about her story, I felt sad and decided to cheer her up. The quilt is the best I can do to cheer the little girl up."

About the gifts, the mother said: "I am happy that there are people out there who care about my daughter. The presents will make her happy."

The girl is due for a womb operation next month. She is currently living with an aunt.
