Yengeni cop stands firm

A high-ranking cop has been implicated in a cover-up surrounding former ANC chief whip Tony Yengeni's arrest on suspicion of drunk driving, the Sunday Times reported yesterday.

A high-ranking cop has been implicated in a cover-up surrounding former ANC chief whip Tony Yengeni's arrest on suspicion of drunk driving, the Sunday Times reported yesterday.

Western Cape Commissioner Mzwandile Petros claims the head of Goodwood Police Station ordered officers to give him the blood sample instead of taking it to a laboratory.

Senior Superintendent Siphiwo Hewana was suspended this week and accused of altering the time of Yengeni's arrest.

Convicted fraudster Yengeni was arrested two weeks ago after his vehicle hit a kerb in Cape Town's northern suburbs. Police arrived and a blood sample was taken at a nearby hospital at 12.30am, not 9am as Hewana said.

Hewana is standing by his version of events and denies all the allegations levelled against him.
