Former SA featherweight and WBU, WBC International and WBA Inter-Continental junior lightweight titleholder Philip "Time Bomb" Ndou is making a comeback.
He announced this yesterday after watching Floyd Mayweather destroy Ricky Hatton in 10 rounds at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas.
But Ndou, who was stopped in nine rounds by Mayweather in 2003 and retired the following year due to poor health, will return as a trainer.
This lanky fighter from Thohoyandou will transfer his boxing skills to professional fighters at the Top Box gym in Fourways, owned by Steve Castle.
Their marriage could be misconstrued as being a publicity stunt but Ndou quickly dismissed that inkling.
"I made my name during my fighting days," he said.
"I've always wanted to train fighters. I won't make any promises and put myself under pressure unnecessarily.
"We will see as we go along".
Castle said the general consensus from all his boxers is that they are delighted to have Ndou as their trainer.
The other former world champion who has made strides as a boxing mentor is Vuyani "The Beast" Bungu.
The former IBF junior featherweight king helped Lunga Ntontela win the IBO belt against Edison Torres in 2002 and guided Zolile Mbityi and Mfundo Gwayana to becoming national champions.
In yesterday's super-bout Ndou had predicted a fourth- round stoppage win for Hatton but Mayweather proved once more that he is by far the best boxer pound-for-pound in the past decade.
In fact, he was lucky that his eagerly awaited fight with Hatton was inside the ring.
Mayweather would have been arrested for manslaughter had it taken place outside the ring.
