A year after the murder of chartered accountant Avhatakali Netshisaulu, his family is still trying to deal with his death.

On Friday, the family commemorated the 31-year-old Netshisaulu's death and held a memorial service at his home in Northriding, Johannesburg.

Then they placed fresh flowers at the open location where he was brutally murdered.

Netshisaulu was the son of City Press editor Mathatha Tsedu.

"This day feels dry and heavy because it was today a year ago that Avhatakali was murdered," said his mother, Dzudzunani Netshisaulu.

Netshisaulu's charred body was found in the boot of his burnt-out car near Muldersdrift, northwest of Johannesburg, a few hours after he called his wife, Mulalo Sivhidzo, telling her he was being shadowed by two cars. He was driving from his home to Honeydew at night. His burnt-out Volkswagen was found by Sivhidzo, who stands accused of being the mastermind behind the murder. She is one of six people charged with his murder.

Sivhidzo is currently out on bail and will appear in the Johannesburg high court next month.

She was conspicuous by her absence.

Dzudzunani said she mourned the death of her "adviser, motivator and best friend".

She claimed her son had been murdered for material gain.

Tsedu said the family was anxious to uncover the truth about his son's murder.

They, however, had been informed by the authorities that it might take yet another year for the case to be finalised.
