The Mpumalanga department of roads and transport will launch vigorous festive season road safety plans in Standerton tomorrow.

The department's spokesman, Vukani Mnyandu, said they would be intensifying road safety campaigns by outlining a plan aimed at reducing road carnage in the province.

"MEC David Mabuza will further unveil new 59 high performance vehicles that will be used by the department's traffic officers to strengthen visible traffic policing," said Mnyandu.

"This will be part of the festive season plan, hence great emphasis will be put on traffic officers' visibility during this period," he said.

In November last year, the department introduced 32 high performance vehicles at the notorious Moloto Road to deal with the high volume of the cars on the "killer road".

"The launch will mark the beginning of a comprehensive campaign by the department in a quest to ensure road users' safety on all roads during the festive season," said Mnyandu.

He said the department had planned road safety shows throughout the province during the festive season.

"This is where the department will ensure close contact with the majority of road users and communities and disseminate messages relating to road safety."

Gospel muso Sipho Makhabane, Zola, Donny and other local musicians will be present to assist in spreading road safety messages during the campaign launch.
