A Mpumalanga sugarcane farmer, who allegedly raped and impregnated his 17-year-old daughter, was denied bail yesterday.
The daughter had been sworn to secrecy about the incident since last year.
The father, who cannot be named to protect the victim, was arrested by Tonga police last month. He lives at Sikhwahlane Trust outside Malelane.
He was not asked to plead and his case was postponed to next week Friday . The Tonga regional court decided to deny him bail yesterday "for his own safety".
The suspect had previously been arrested on the same allegations last year against the same daughter, but his family members subsequently withdrew the charges against him.
The court gallery was packed to capacity with furious residents who wanted to make sure he would not be granted bail.
This was his third appearance. The last time saw residents picketing outside the magistrate's court.
They chanted songs and threatened to hurl stones at him. The daughter, who is a Grade 12 pupil at the local NJ Mahlangu Combined School, told Sowetan that she was first raped and impregnated by her father at his farm where they were irrigating, but that the pregnancy was aborted.
She said he raped her for the second time at home.
She said her father left her mother and went to her room were he forced himself on to her.
This second pregnancy proved difficult to abort. The entire situation turned ugly when the daughter was seen pregnant and pointed at her father as the father of the unborn baby. The young girl is now seven months pregnant.
The suspect's wife refused to comment about the incident, saying the matter "is too personal".
However, Tonga police spokesman Constable Mzwandile Nyambi confirmed that they were investigating charges of incest and rape.
