In the past few years, citizens have been hit hard by sky-rocketing interest rates. Public employees continuously engage in strikes for minimum wages. Millions survive below the poverty line and it's ridiculous to expect these people to pay more for electricity.
Consumers have been subjected to endless blackouts and businesses, who are losing massive profits, are boldly told: "There's nothing we can do about it." Such arrogance and disdain is not surprising because that's how monopolies behave. I understand that Eskom has to build new power stations to curb blackouts, but the people must not suffer because of that.
The government must rescue Eskom because it boasts about a strong economy. The cheap talk to eradicate poverty will remain a pipe-dream because government is hellbent on flushing any growth down the drain.
The youth can forget about progressing because even if they pass the strict affordability tests of banks to buy property, the interest will take them to the cleaners.
Whoever approved Eskom's proposal must be realistic. Bettering people's lives depends on decisions taken by the powers-that-be. It will be absolutely criminal to give Eskom the go ahead.
