Thanda Royal Zulu have shown interest in Venezuelan Jose Torrealba, whom the Safa Appeals Board this week upheld the PSL's decision to declare him a free agent.
Sowetan has learnt that Thanda are offering him a monthly salary of R80000. Torrealba was reportedly earning R35 000 a month at Sundowns.
Johan Eriksson, Thanda's assistant coach, said: "I don't think there is anything serious about him joining us at this stage."
Josiah Mphono, Torrealba's representative, yesterday confirmed that the KwaZulu-Natal outfit had made an enquiry about the stocky striker.
There were also reports linking Torrealba with a move to Kaizer Chiefs, who on Monday said they wanted him to resolve his dispute with Sundowns first.
Mphono also confirmed discussions with Chiefs.
Approached for comment, Chiefs' team manager Bobby Motaung said: "We have a problem of the foreign quota at this stage.
"We are already sitting on five foreign players signed by the club this season. Even if we speak to Torrealba, it will be for next season."
Fifa earlier, following a complaint from Sundowns that Torrealba had gone AWOL, ruled that the player belonged to the Brazilians.
The war between Torrealba and Sundowns got worse when the PSL's Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC) ruled in favour of the player.
Torrealba disputed that the signature on the extended contract was not his. He argued that he was in Europe on the day Sundowns claimed he signed the new deal.
Two independent hand writing experts also ruled that the signature on the alleged contract extended by Torrealba was definitely not his.
Downs lost the case, but decided to appeal to the Safa Appeals Board. But on Wednesday, Safa upheld the DRC' s ruling to declare Torrealba a free agent.
Patrice Motsepe, Sundowns president, had earlier this year said he would fire any of his staff members implicated in any fraud relating to the Torrealba scandal.
Messages left on Motsepe's cellular phone on Wednesday and the whole of yesterday had not been returned at the time of going to press.
Sundowns have 72 hours to settle for arbitration but had not informed the PSL's prosecutor Zola Majavu of their decision at the time of going to press.
Mphono said: "Locally, Jose would like to play for Chiefs. There was an offer from Arminia Bielefeld in Germany but could not take it because there were too many politics.
"For now, he wants a new home so that he can play and return to the national team."
