We congratulate the new members of the Sowetan Nation Building family who are being honoured in Johannesburg tonight.

They are part of thousands who have been unearthed and brought to prominence by the Community Builder of the Year project.

The project honours people who give of themselves for the betterment of their communities. They work tirelessly to uplift and develop their areas.

They feed, counsel and nurture children. They mediate in the battle of ordinary citizens to access state instruments including birth certificates, grants and pensions.

They give meaning to the lives of the elderly who have been cast aside by their families. They are in the forefront of the fight against TB and HIV-Aids.

They comfort the dying and take care of the disabled. They lend a hand to the outcasts of society and lead the way for communities to develop and live in harmony.

They are the slayers of the dragons of illiteracy and poverty.

They are the invisible glue that keeps communities together as they alleviate the suffering of the downtrodden and those without hope.

We thank them for their efforts and successes. We thank them for their selflessness and their interest in the lives of their fellow men.
