The short-term insurance industry has contributed R500000 towards the training of 500 police officers in Gauteng as part of business' initiative against crime, the South African Insurance Association (SAIA) said in Johannesburg yesterday.
The money will not only train 500 police detectives but will also improve their detection methods. These would ultimately lead to improved prosecutions.
Refilwe Moletsane, SAIA deputy chief executive, told a media conference jointly organised by SAIA, Business Against Crime, the Gauteng government and the provincial police that they hoped the initiative would help in the fight against crime.
About 41 detectives piloted the short training course, which was identified by Gauteng police earlier this year.
Perumal Naidoo, the Gauteng police commissioner, said the on-going training and development was crucial to effective service delivery.
"All South Africans, companies and institutions must join hands with the authorities to fight crime," said Moletsane.
