A KwaZulu-Natal grandmother who turned a blind eye to being battered by his mentally ill grandson for years was yesterday finally killed by him.
The death of Jumaima Mazibuko, 79, has left the rural community of Ulundi in shock.
Locals said she loved and cared for her mentally ill grandson from the day he became ill.
Regardless of her efforts in taking care of the 35-year-old grandson, he stabbed her to death following an argument that erupted at 1am yesterday.
A terrified Mavis Mazibuko, the granny's daughter, who was sleeping in a rondavel next to the one where the incident took place, said she heard a noise, prompting her to go and investigate as she was suspicious.
She said the suspect occasionally fought with his grandmother over "stupid" things.
She told police at the scene of the crime that she first heard the noise around 1am.
She said she found the suspect fighting with her mother and demanding food.
Police spokesman Jay Naicker said when police arrived at the scene they found Mazibuko lying in a pool of blood.
Naicker said according to information they received from the family, it was not the first time that the suspect had battered his grandmother.
"According to the family, the suspect was very disrespectful and battered his grandmother all the time. But the poor old woman could not blame him because of his mental state," said Naicker.
The suspect immediately fled the scene after stabbing his grandmother. He is still on the run.
A case of murder is being investigated and police are confident they will arrest the suspect soon.
In October this year, a 25-year-old mentally ill man from KwaMsane, in northern KwaZulu-Natal, was arrested for repeatedly raping his mother.
The 45-year-old mother was also embarrassed to report the matter to the police.
She kept silent until one of her children decided to report the matter to a health official, who in turn alerted the police.
