Soweto hosts Shona Khona

Shona Khona youth soccer development camps will held throughout the country this weekend. Soweto - the birthplace of seve- ral soccer greats, who include Jomo Sono, Kaizer Motaung and Joel Mnini - is one of the places hosting the camps.

Shona Khona was started by Reckitt Benckiser and Metro Cash and Carry, and is now in partnership with Premier Soccer League club Mamelodi Sundowns, financial services company AIG South Africa, sports management agency Forwad Zone and media partners Sowetan and the SABC.

Soccer legend Nobel Maja will host the Shona Khona camp in Soweto. Maja played for Moroka Swallows in the 1980s. He will manage the camp with Safa-selected coach Bongani Nhlapo.

In all, 800 hopefuls will attend the soccer coaching and life skills camps nationwide, 10 on Saturday and another 10 on Sunday.

Regional camps - open to youngsters aged between 10 and 16 - wil be held at:

l Mandela Sports Complex in Soshanguve; l Mehlareng Stadium in Tembisa, Fiat Sport Centre in Meadowlands;l Ngwelezane New Field in Empangeni; l KwaThana Stadium in Marble Hall, Botshabelo Stadium in Free State; l Thembalethu Sports Grounds in George; l Rotary Stadium in Mthatha; l Masupha Sports Grounds in Atteridgeville, and Galeshewe Stadium in Kimberley.

And, on Sunday the Shona Khona soccer coaching and life skills camps take place at:l Polokwane Cricket Ground in Polokwane; l Phelendaba Soccer Grounds in Newcastle; l Vaal University of Technology in Vereeniging; l Ashdown Stadium in Pietermaritzburg; l Hoxani Sports Field in Bushbuckridge; l Khayelitsha Stadium in Khayelitsha; l Wolfson Stadium in KwaZakhele, Port Elizabeth; l Jan Smuts Stadium Number 2 in East London; l Itsoseng Stadium in Itsoseng, North West; l and at the Kopano Indoor Sports and Community Centre in Welkom.
