It is not everyday that we get to drive a SsangYong for our used test car, but we were surprised how well and solid the build quality was on our demo model 2007 SsangYong Rexton 2,7 diesel.

Some may see SsangYong as a rip-off to Mercedes-Benz, but this is not the case as it is a unique car and has lots to offer.

As mentioned above, this is a demo model with a mere 14000km on the clock, making it almost new and it has that "new car" scent filling the air.

The Rexton is one of the best value for money SUV's on the market and with a powerplant sourced from Mercedes-Benz, it is a recipe set for success.

The different styling makes it an appealing car. From the outside the dimension is compact, with short overhangs and big head and tail lights for an attractive appearance. Our used model is the latest face-lifted version that looks miles better than the previous one.

The exterior shows no damage marks, scratches or bumps. The tyres will still be good for more than 20000km. The majority of the material used inside is black and of soft touch quality. This plus the leather seats add to a feel of luxury.

The multi-functional steering wheel contributes to easy operating of controls while driving, which is also a safety feature as your eyes don't lose sight of the road. There is loads of space in the cabin and tall passengers will find plenty of room for their legs.

Under the bonnet you'll find a willing five-cylinder 2,7 litre turbo diesel engine sourced from Merc and coupled to a smooth five-speed manual gearbox.

This engine develops enough power to carry this vehicle with no sweat at highway speeds, even with five passengers on board. Power output stands at an impressive 121kW and 340Nm.

The Rexton won't see the dirt tracks very often, but if the buyer chooses to take it off-road, it will surprise its owner; it is capable. Being a 4x4 and running on 16-inch semi-off-road tyres, the Rexton with its short overhangs will get you over most obstacles. Ground clearance is good and the chassis won't get easily damaged.

In the urban jungle and its tar roads, the Rexton handles and drives like a dream. The suspension is soft and soaks up most of the major bumps so that the drive is just that more comfortable. Although this is an SUV, handling and parking does not require much skill.

Luxury and convenience features include climate control, electric windows, adjustable steering with power steering, front-loading CD-player and six airbags to add to the safety of the car, as well as ABS brakes with traction control.
