Prisoners die in crash

Three prisoners and a driver were killed in an accident near Christiana, North West, yesterday, the provincial government said.

Three prisoners and a driver were killed in an accident near Christiana, North West, yesterday, the provincial government said.

Spokesman James Moche said the prisoners died when a prison van they were travelling in collided head-on with a truck on the N2 between Christiana and Warrenton at 10am.

"A passenger, who was also a correctional services department employee, and the truck driver were critically injured. They were taken to Christiana Hospital," Moche said.

He said it appeared that the truck was pulling a second truck when a tyre burst on one of the vehicles - causing it to lose control and collide with the truck.

North West transport, roads and community safety MEC, Phenye Vilakazi, expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased.

He urged motorists to be vigilant.

"We call on all drivers to check the roadworthiness of their vehicles before they undertake any trips.

"Accidents cost our economy dearly and civil society must play its role to decrease fatalities on our roads." Vilakazi said. - Sapa
