South Africa's best community builders will be honoured at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg tomorrow evening.
Through the 17th yearly Old Mutual, SABC and Sowetan Community Builder of the Year Award, Sowetan shows the depth of commitment and unstinting contribution to this country's development and its bright future.
This award is one of 11 nation-building projects which were initiated by Sowetan's former Editor-in-Chief Aggrey Klaaste. He launched the newspaper's nation-building concept, philosophy and work in Crown Mines near Soweto in 1988. The community builder award was launched in 1991.
The foundation's nation-building concept, philosophy and work started out of a need to save South Africa from exploding, imploding or simply falling into an abyss of uncertainty.
It took shape at a time of great political intolerance, social instability and economic gloom and doom. It still thrives on healthy partnerships with business, provincial and national government departments as well as all like-minded individuals, groups and organisations.
The Community Builder of the Year Award recognises and honours selfless individuals who make a difference in the lives of fellow South Africans.
We promote excellence and integrity, create an efficient leadership among our people and strive for the best in all that we do for ourselves and our fellow human beings.
Undoubtedly, this unique partnership - in which the nine provincial services departments are key partners - will continue to ensure that loving, giving, sharing, caring, humility, brotherhood and sisterhood, community and goodwill will always remain a part of our people's culture and never go out of fashion.
