All hands on deck

The Local Organising Committee will start with the process of recruiting volunteers across the country for the 2010 World Cup next year.

The Local Organising Committee will start with the process of recruiting volunteers across the country for the 2010 World Cup next year.

This was announced yesterday by Tumi Makgabo, the LOC communications officer and head of international affairs.

"We will start with the process in 2008, an announcement will be made once the logistics regarding the recruitment process have been finalised.

"Applications forms for people interested in becoming volunteers will also be available on the website of Fifa," said Makgabo.

The LOC is on record stating they will recruit ordinary people and experts in various fields to serve as volunteers.

The experts include medical practitioners, translators, people from the legal fraternity and those in information technology.

In other European and Asian countries where big tournaments like the Olympics and World Athletics Championships took place, some of the doctors and lawyers serve as drivers.

Volunteers who were recruited for the 2010 Preliminary draw in Durban last week will also be integrated into the ones who will be roped in next year.

They will be offered formal training.

The LOC has also indicated that they will recruit foreign nationals based in South Africans to help with translations.
