Ramaphosa must save the ANC and our country

Fairness and values must never be abandoned in life.

Fairness and values must never be abandoned in life.

The results of the first round of the ANC's votes are very interesting. Voting was not guided by logic or common sense, but by emotion. The persistence of Thabo Mbeki and Jacob Zuma to run for presidency is not motivated by commitment to the ANC, but by ego and hunger for power. Zuma is as power hungry as Mbeki.

Mbeki's decision to contest the elections surprises me as much as the decision by Zuma to run.

Ordinary people need to know that the ANC vote is not final, but our vote is.

The only candidate who might guarantee the ANC a victory in 2009 is Cyril Ramaphosa. He is the only one who can save the movement.

Most ANC lefties do not envisage a defeat in 2009, but I believe, for the first time since 1994, the ANC will be shaken. Whoever is elected in Limpopo will be ANC president, but he doesn't have to be your president or mine.

Ramaphosa's legacy will be that he stood by while the ANC went astray. We will not remember him as a great politician, but a coward who chose silver and gold rather than save his people.

If we lose our democracy in the process, he will be one of the people we will blame.

Zuma and Mbeki stand for what they want and believe in. Ramaphosa, stand up and be counted, or the ANC will lose power in 2009.
