KwaMashu police in KwaZulu-Natal have launched a massive manhunt for a man who allegedly shot and killed a mother and daughter on Friday.

The incident has left the community shocked at what has been described as "brutality against women". This happened while the country is supposed to join hands during the period of 16 days of activism of no abuse against women and children.

Nobuhle Ngubane, 24, and her mother, Zamo Ngubane, were both shot and killed by Nobuhle's "abusive" boyfriend.

The "abusive" boyfriend, who cannot be named until he appears in court has since fled his home after he allegedly shot the two women.

A neighbour of the women remembers the suspect as always having been abusive.

"He used to batter her all the time and she was extremely scared of him. Even Nobuhle's family knew about the abuse.

"On the night of the shooting, the suspect had gone to Nobuhle's home and forcefully took her to his home.

"Nobuhle's mother was worried that the suspect would harm her daughter.

"She decided to go over to the suspect's house to fetch her. There was an argument between the suspect and Nobuhle's mother. While the mother and daughter were walking home, the suspect caught up with them. Without saying a word, he pulled out his gun and shot both of them in the head," said the neighbour.

Police spokesman Siwe Nxumalo said the suspect fled the area after shooting the women.

"Residents say this was not the first time that the couple had had a fight," said Nxumalo.

KwaMashu Police are investigating a case of murder.
