Free State Stars consolidated their second spot on the log when they beat SuperSport United 1-0 in an Absa Premiership fixture at Goble Park in Bethlehem yesterday, writes Thabo Johnson .

The home side had a slight edge over their opponents and created more chances. Matsatsantsa a Pitori also had a share of the interchanges when Katlego Mphela twice shot in the path of Stars' goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene in the 13th and 22nd minutes.

The best chance for Free State Stars was in the 30 minute when Jimmy Kauleza's shot was cleared off the goal line by experienced goalkeeper Andre Arendse with the help of two defenders.

Daine Klate was unlucky not to score in the 36th minute when his well-taken free kick was parried over the bar by Mweene. At restart, the home side finally scored through Diyo Sibisi who came on for Moses Mbuyane. He found the net in the 48th minute.

l Meshack Khotha reports that Bidvest Wits and Golden Arrows battled to a 1-1 draw in an exciting encounter at Milpark Stadium yesterday.

Both teams played attacking football and created inviting scoring chances from the opening minutes, but their strikers failed to convert through slipshod shooting.

In the process, Arrows goalie Nkosana Maseko denied Wits an early lead when he made brilliant saves from Noah Chivuta and Ashraf Hendricks in the 48th and 50th minutes respectively.

But it was the Clever Boys who took the initiative via Chivuta from a penalty spot after his teammate, Bienvenu Tipa, was tripped inside the box by Arrows' defender Thanduyise Khuboni in the 65th minute. The visitors equalised in the 73rd minute when Vusumuzi Dlamini's close-range shot beat Wits goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs.

l Santos collected the full points at home when they beat Bloemfontein Celtic 1-0 in a dull and uninspiring league game at Athlone Stadium yesterday, writes Thami Nqolobe.
