The national chairman of the United Christian Democratic Party (UCDP), Isaac Mfundisi, has urged party members to pray for the ANC's coming national conference to elect a suitable person to guide the country in the right direction after December.
Mfundisi was speaking during the official launch of the party's first six new branches in Limpopo at Modubung village in Bolobedu, outside Modjadjiskloof, at the weekend.
He told members that the responsibility for his party's growth lay with their members.
Mfundisi urged them to avoid fighting for leadership, but to "work hard to build the party in the province".
The party has managed to get its feet on the ground in Limpopo after Greater Letaba municipal councillor, Samuel Maimela, crossed the floor to UCDP at the last minute during the floor-crossing period two months ago.
UCDP was started by former homeland leader of the Bophuthatswana Chief Lucas Mangope in 1972. It ruled the homeland until the first democratic elections in 1994.
The party failed to do well after the 1994 elections when the ANC took over the reigns. But it bounced back in 1995 and won 13 seats after municipal elections.
Mfundisi said his party had managed to win three seats in the North West legislature and three in the national assembly after the 1999 general elections.
In the 2000 local government elections, its representation increased from 13 to 113 councillors in various municipalities and seven members in different provincial legislatures.
"We are a party that fights for social justice. We are also against the ruling party's proposal of reducing the existing number of provinces because this will make service delivery difficult," said Mfundisi.
Meanwhile, Greater Letaba municipal councillor Samuel Maimela said he would ensure that members worked hard for the party to grow in Limpopo.
