ANC president Thabo Mbeki has received further support in his fight against Jacob Zuma, with Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang attacking the women's league for "deviating" from party decisions.

Tshabalala-Msimang's comments come in the wake of the ANC Women's League nominating Zuma for the party's top spot, despite earlier indications that it would nominate a woman for the position.

She made the comment during her World Aids Day visit to Mokopane in Limpopo on Saturday, reports SABC news. Tshabalala-Msimang said the ANC's previous conference in Stellenbosch and the policy conference in Gauteng had resolved that women representatives should be increased to 50percent

"As we engage in the process of nominations and election of leadership of our movement at the Limpopo conference, we have to defend the principle of our movement including that of gender equality," said Tshabalala-Msimang.
