The department of Home Affairs and Kopanong Hospital in Vereeniging are working frantically to 'bring back to life' 19-year-old Nomthandazo Masanabo, declared dead and buried last month.

Masanabo is in fact very much alive. Instead, it is Oratile Noge who died and was buried.

In October, Maria Masilela mistakenly buried six-year-old Oratile Noge from Brits, North West, after her identity was confused with that of her daughter Nomthandazo.

The two girls had been living in the same institution and were both mentally handicapped. Both were admitted to the same hospital. Masilela, who also has a mental ailment herself, could not correctly identify her daughter but was led to believe that Oratile's medical file was that of her daughter Nomthandazo.

Masilela was later notified by officials from Home Affairs that she had buried the wrong girl. She is now sitting with a death certificate when her daughter is very much alive. Kopanong Hospital has already issued a letter stating that Nomthandazo is alive and Home Affairs will restore her social grant.
