Workmen collecting waste at resi- dential areas around Pinetown and Mariannhill near Durban got the shock of their lives when the body of a newborn baby fell from one of the rubbish bags.
The baby had an umbilical cord still attached to it.
It is believed that the mother had given birth, killed the baby and then stuffed the it into a plastic bag.
The rubbish bags had been collected from the Nazareth area near Pinetown on Wednesday.
Workers from Durban Solid Waste had picked up rubbish from residential areas earlier that morning and taken it to the Marianhill landfill site when the dead baby was found.
A grader machine used to bundle rubbish together lifted one of the plastic bags, and the baby fell from the bag.
The baby was already dead.
Police spokesman Debbie O'Brien said at this stage it was not clear if the baby was born dead or killed after birth.
By yesterday, the gender of the baby had not been established.
O'Brien said an inquest is being contemplated. She appealed to members of the public who might have information that would lead to finding the baby's mother to come forward.
"I appeal to members of the public who might know of anyone who was recently pregnant and whose expected baby has suddenly disappeared to come forward with such information."
