Joint patrols for Tzaneen roads

The Greater Tzaneen traffic department will be conducting joint operations with the provincial department of roads and transport on all major routes.

The operations, focusing on routes leading to Tzaneen's central business district, will start this weekend and continue until after New Year's Day.

The operations are aimed at reducing the rate of road carnage on routes going in and out of Tzaneen.

Head of traffic in the Greater Tzaneen Municipality Johannes Malatji said a large number of traffic officers would be deployed on the R71 road, the Tzaneen-Lydenburg road, and Motupa Road, where motorists would be encouraged to drive carefully and adhere to all traffic rules to arrive at their destinations safely.

He said they were disturbed by the behaviour of some motorists who failed to cooperate with traffic officers and other motorists on the roads.

Malatji said pedestrians and motorists must share a piece of the road on the eastern side of the Tzaneen Mall because the area was congested because of the extension of the mall as well as taxi and bus ranks.

"We will leave no stone unturned and motorists whose vehicles are not roadworthy must not take chances because traffic officers will be working round the clock," Malatji said.
