Doyen of boxing writers Leonard Neill, who died last Thursday, will be buried at the Westpark cemetery today.
His memorial service will be held at Boxing SA's offices at Nasrec from 10am. It will conducted by recently enthroned preacher, former world champion Masibulele "Hawk" Makepula.
Shona MacTaggart, who organised the service on behalf of Neill's family, announced yesterday that Neill's body will be laid in a specially assembled boxing ring before being carried by six of Nick Durandt's many champions to the cemetery.
At the time of his death Neill, 75, walked with crutches. He fell at home and suffered a hip injury. But that did not prevent him from matching for Thinus Strydom before his death.
Neill, who matched boxing fights for Mike Segal and Rodney Berman before joining SuperSport as a commentator, had been in boxing for 60 years.
Acclaimed boxing writer, Ron Jackson, wrote on the SuperSport website that Neill wrote his first articles on boxing at the age of 17.
"He was named Man of the Year in 1985 at the annual King Korn Boxing Awards. I have known Leonard for close on 30 years and I was privileged to share television commentary with him. I will miss our boxing chats on the telephone."
