The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) has congratulated NUM president, Senzeni Zokwana, who has been elected leader of an international 20 million-member union federation in Thailand.

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) has congratulated NUM president, Senzeni Zokwana, who has been elected leader of an international 20 million-member union federation in Thailand.

"Cosatu congratulates Zokwana on his unopposed election as president of the 20 million-strong International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mine and General Workers Unions (ICEM) at its congress in Bangkok, Thailand, on Friday," said Cosatu spokesman Patrick Craven.

NUM general secretary Frans Baleni described Zokwana's election as "a sign of confidence in South Africa and its people".

A total of 840 union leaders from 75 countries are attending the ICEM congress in Bangkok. - Sapa
