Suicide rumour hangs on payslip

Riot Hlatshwayo

A Mpumalanga teacher committed suicide yesterday morning - apparently because of frustrations related to the deduction of monies from his salary arising from absenteeism during the strike by public servants.

The body of the teacher, who cannot be identified because police are still establishing his next of kin, was found hanging with a rope from the rafters of a pit toilet at Areagh village near Thulamahashe at about 9am.

"The information that he committed suicide because the government has deducted money from his salary in relation to the public servants strike still remains a rumour to us.

"We therefore cannot officially confirm that," said Mpumalanga police spokesman, Superintendent Abie Khoabane.

Police have opened an inquest case for further investigations.
