There were no sore losers when the winners of the Sowetan-Old Mutual Bridal Couple of the Year competition were announced at a gala event on the West Rand on Saturday.

"At the end of the day, marriage won," said Pumelele Mgolombane after he and his bride, Kagisho, lost to the night's golden couple, Mikateko and Vusumuzi Sibeko at Maropeng.

The Sibekos, of Auckland Park, Johannesburg, beat 11 other finalists and drove away with the competition's main prize, a luxury Volvo S40 sedan, and vouchers from Galaxy Jewellers, Aranda Blankets, unit trusts worth R10000 from Old Mutual and electrical appliances.

The Mgolombanes were the first runners-up and Kgopotso and Muziwakhe Zondo came third.

True to their sociable nature the young winners took to the dance floor after the announcement.

Sarah and Muzi Nhlapo, who made it to the top six of the competition, said the Sibekos were the "obvious choice. They look good together and they got along with all of us".

The night was the culmination of a gruelling judging process that started on Friday. The couples were judged on compatibility, interaction with each other and the other couples, and their knowledge of the sponsors' brands.

Now in its 15th year, the competition is a Sowetan nation-building initiative. The event will be broadcast on Zwahashu on SABC2 at 6pm next Thursday.
