The Soweto police emergency service, famously known as the flying squad, held its third yearly award ceremony to honourmembers and non-police staff on Friday.

Unit head Superintendent Alson Mnguni said: "We need to say thank you to people who make our department effective."

The flying squad reacts to some of the most dangerous incidents of crime, such as cash-in-transit heists and drug busts.

The unit's head of communications, Nomasonto Lumka, said: "Our members work very hard dealing with emergency calls, so they really need something to boost their confidence."

The winners, who included administration and control room staff, were honoured with trophies, medals, certificates and corporate gifts.

Captain Molefi Mokoane and his team, as well as Sergeants Masedi Ramasi and Zamani Ngubane, won for making the most arrests.

"The awards should encourage officers to work even harder with other colleagues to deliver the best service to our community," said Lumka.
