The family of a man fighting for his life in hospital after being shot seven times at point-blank range is furious that his assailants, who are known to them, are still roaming the streets.
Lenny Kramer (not his real name) from Davidsonville in Roodepoort, was shot last Saturday after an argument with the men at a pub.
Speaking from his hospital bed yesterday Kramer said he was happy to be alive. He said he was only trying to intervene in a quarrel between some of the men and one of his friends. Kramer was shot four times in the torso and three times in the lower body.
Mary Steyl (not her real name), Kramer's sister-in-law, said they were afraid that the gang would kill him in hospital because they had allegedly asked neighbours whether he had died or was still alive.
She said the police had not arrested anyone even after they told officers that witnesses could identify the people who shot Kramer and who had been asking the questions.
West Rand police spokesman Captain Siphiwe Ndlovu confirmed the incident as a drive-by shooting and denied that Kramer was shot at close range.
The investigating officer said when the case was reported none of the suspects was known.
He said he would conduct interviews with Kramer at the weekend but yesterday Kramer said police had not taken any statements from him.
