President Thabo Mbeki's gesture to consider granting amnesty to people jailed for politically motivated crimes is most welcome.

This move should be seen as finishing the unfinished business of the TRC that imposed a cut-off date of May 10 1994, though acts of violence and human rights abuses still continued in many areas throughout the country thereafter.

Applicants, this category excludes those whose appeals had been turned down by the Amnesty Committee, should however not expect mercy unless they provide full disclosure of their crimes.

This will inform the victims' families about what happened to their loved ones. Only the truth and nothing but the truth shall set them free.
