Maisels Fikile Kooma died last Saturday aged 74 after suffering a stroke four weeks ago.
"MaKooma", as she was fondly known by her pupils, taught for 45 years before retiring in 1998. She spent most of her teaching career at Ipatleleng-Zifuneleni School in Orlando East, Soweto.
Her products include politicians, government officials, sports stars and a long list of other professionals.
Among them are former SA National Defence Force chief Siphiwe Nyanda, national Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi, Deputy Safety and Security Minister Susan Shabangu, soccer personalities Kaizer Motaung and Jerry Sadike.
Most of her pupils knew her as passionate about her profession, "an effective teacher both in the classroom and on the extramural field".
A highly active community worker and member of the AME Church, Kooma had a big heart for the aged, Aids orphans and the poor. She regularly supplied food parcels, clothes, blankets and toys to needy people.
Born in Fietas (Vrededorp) in Johannesburg, she grew up in Orlando East where she also went to school. She obtained a teaching diploma at Wilberforce Teacher's Training College where she met her husband Ketso Kooma.
They married in 1958 and had six children. They lived in Pimville, Soweto, where she still lived at the time of her death. She is survived by five children and six grandchildren.
Kooma will be buried tomorrow at Avalon Cemetery at 11:30am. The funeral service will be held at the AME Mokone Memorial Church in Zone 6, Pimville, from 8:30am.
