David Baba Mashinini was born in Vrede in the Free State on March 13 1913.

He was the first son of Petrus and Wilheminah Mashinini in a family of five children. The family moved to Benoni Old Location in 1922. He obtained his matric and Teacher's Certificate from Marianhill in KwaZulu-Natal.

His first post as a teacher was in Frankfort. He later moved to Reitz Bantu Community School.

He moved back to Benoni in 1963 and taught at Etwatwa Secondary School until his retirement in the late 1970s.

Mashinini was also a staunch lay preacher in the Methodist church. A keen tennis player with a popular following in the Free State, he was a soccer fanatic - dubbed the "Number 1 fan" of the Wattville Football Association.

Mashinini married Elsie Hadebe of Frankfort in 1938. Together, they had 11 children.

Elsie died in 2000.

Mashinini is survived by four sons and four daughters, 19 grandchildren and several great- and great-great-grandchildren.

He will be buried at the Boksburg Cemetery (Lever) tomorrow at 9am. The funeral service, at the local Methodist Church in Wattville starts at 7am.
