Mpumalanga police are still searching for the body of a 19-year-old man who was killed by a crocodile last Thursday evening.
The teenager, who cannot be identified until his next of kin have been notified, was swimming in the Komati River in Mpumalanga when he was snatched by the crocodile.
An eye-witness, Sibusiso Nkambule, said the victim was swimming near a rock. But minutes later he was seen struggling to free himself from the jaws of a crocodile before disappearing into the water.
"There was nothing we could do to save the guy because the river was infested with crocodiles. We feared for our own safety," said Nkambule.
The victim's clothes and his ID were found on the banks of the Komati River where he had left them before jumping into the river.
The police rescue team and game rangers were called to the scene on that fateful day but their search proved futile.
Despite their continued search for the body, their rescue efforts have yielded nothing so far.
"We are relying on the victim's ID to establish who his next of kin are. But we are still continuing with the search for his body," said Komatipoort police spokesman Constable Richard Khumalo yesterday.
Incidents involving crocodile attacks appear to be on the rise in the Nkomazi area.
An eight-year-old boy was attacked by a crocodile in the Mlomati River at Langeloop village recently.
Meanwhile, Alex Masinga was arrested for allegedly killing a crocodile that apparently attacked him last year.
Masinga's charges were, however, withdrawn after the local magistrate's court said the evidence against him was insufficient to warrant a trial.
