A six-year-old Pietermaritzburg boy is receiving trauma counselling after he watched his father shoot his mother before turning the gun on himself on Sunday.

Derrick Msomi is in a serious condition at Grey Hospital. The deceased, Nozipho Chikwane, 31, was at her Howick home with her son when the incident happened.

Police believe the couple had an argument, which resulted in Msomi shooting Chikwane in the head in front of the boy.

After shooting his girlfriend, Msomi allegedly turned the gun on himself.

When police arrived at the scene, Chikwane was already dead while Msomi lay unconscious on the floor.

Police took the boy for counselling after they found him in a state of shock inside the house.

A neighbour alerted police after he heard gunfire at Chikwane's residence.

Police spokesman Joey Jeevan said a case of murder had been opened.

In another incident, KwaMashu police recovered two bodies of teenagers dumped on the roadside at L Section on Sunday.

The bodies were identified as that of Mfundo Nzimande, 18, and Sibusiso Zungu, 19.
