Spokesman Freddy Thaver said two workers in Benoni were trapped in the manhole and "were found on top of each other covered in sewage".
The workers were hauled back up by a firefighter using rescue ropes. One was taken to hospital. "His condition can be described as life-threatening," said Thaver.
