Local paper gives youth something useful to fill their time

Alfred Moselakgomo

The youth of Sakhile, Standerton, have come up with a novel idea to attract motorists to support their new business.

The good looking guys and gorgeous ladies take off their covers to show off their fit and beautiful bodies.

The car wash was the idea of Landiwe Nzimande, an unemployed Standerton youth who was sitting at home with a matric certificate.

"After looking for work for a long time without success, I decided to approach a local business and asked them to sponsor me in opening a bikini car wash in the area," said Nzimande.

"I went to a local newspaper in Standerton who offered to supply us with cleaning materials," she said.

The car wash also sells food and Nzimande said it was her aim to invite local celebrities once a month to boost her business.

The car wash is made up of 30 young busy bodies and operates next to a tennis court in Sakhile.

It charges R30 per car, half of which goes to other community projects, while the car washers keep the rest.

August Moyo of Khanyisa News said they were proud to sponsor the initiative because it provided work for local unemployed youth.

"When the organiser of the car wash approached us for help, we gladly offered to help because we saw the project as part of Vuk 'uzenzele (wake up and do it yourself)," said Moyo.

He confirmed that they were providing cleaning materials to the car wash operators and challenged other business people to follow suit as the initiative kept the youth off the streets.
