Pension day in Umlazi turned scary when pensioners waiting in long queues for their grants had to flee from robbers.

Some of the elderly people sustained injuries when the robbers attacked a pension point in the KwaZulu-Natal township yesterday morning.

The incident is the second in a week.

It is alleged that about eight armed robbers held up the van carrying the cash at Umlazi's U section just before 8am.

A woman sustained serious injury when one of the robbers pistol-whipped her. Paramedics treated a few other people for minor injuries at the scene.

Police spokesman Daniela Veldhuizen confirmed the incident. She said witnesses had told police that the gang had fled with a number of money bags.

Veldhuizen could not say how much money was taken. She said about eight suspects entered the hall and held up people at gunpoint.

Veldhuizen said no one had been arrested.

The incident comes a week after three elderly women escaped a hail of bullets at the Hibberdene pension pay point.

One security guard died on the scene, while another was rushed to hospital.

Two of the robbers were shot when security guards fired back.

l In yet another incident, robbers fled with an undisclosed amount of money after bombing an ATM in Mt Edgecombe plaza on Sunday.

Police said they have not been able to establish how many people were involved in the bombing, but they believe that the robbers used explosives to rip apart the ATM machine.
