A Soweto mother is fearing for her life and that of her six-year-old daughter after the man who raped her child escaped from police custody last week.
Paul Mofokeng, 26, a self-confessed rapist, escaped from the Protea magistrate's court on Wednesday, allegedly with the help of the police.
Mofokeng confessed to abducting and repeatedly raping the girl, of Mofolo, Soweto, for two days in August.
He appeared in court on Wednesday and his case was postponed to December 28 for a high court sentencing.
After his appearance, Mofokeng vanished from the police holding cells, but the girl's mother was only informed about the escape by police on Thursday night.
The distraught mother said: "I cannot even sleep. I am scared that he might come into my home and kill me and my child."
The mother and her three daughters live in a backroom in a yard they share with other families.
Jabulani police spokesman Inspector Kay Makhubela said: "The child will be removed from her home and taken to a place of safety. Police will patrol the area to ensure the family is safe."
He said Mofokeng used two names and was out on bail for attempted rape when he kidnapped and raped the girl in his shack.
"His other name is Vusi Zwane. He attempted to rape a two-year-old girl from the same area," said Makhubela.
Two inspectors who were on duty the day Mofokeng escaped were arrested on Thursday.
The case against them was withdrawn on Friday after the prosecutor declined to prosecute as there was not enough evidence linking them to Mofokeng's escape.
