This comes after South African soccer giants Orlando Pirates pulled both Teko Modise and Bennet Chenene out of the Bafana Bafana team to face Canada in Durban tomorrow evening.
Sowetan learnt of this move yesterday from team manager Sipho Nkumane, who said they received a letter from his Pirates counterpart, Shakes Mashaba, notifying them of the pull-out.
The letter claims Chenene was injured during the Moqhaka Charity Cup game against Free State Stars in Welkom yesterday, and Modise was recalled from camp to join his Bucs teammates at training for the derby against Kaizer Chiefs, also in Durban on Saturday.
"We are going to write a letter to Fifa and inform them of this. Both players stand the chance of also missing out on the derby that they are being recalled for," Nkumane said.
"It is also ironic that it is Mashaba who signed the letter after he quit the national team as coach for the same reasons, being deprived of the players he had selected for a Bafana Bafana game."
Pirates could not be reached for comment yesterday.
Meanwhile, Bafana Bafana coach Carlos Alberto Parreira believes his side needs results to boost their confidence before the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations. He was speaking ahead of the international friendly against Canada.
Bafana play the Canadians two days after suffering a 1-0 loss to the US in the Nelson Mandela Inauguration Challenge.
"We need to get results now to boost the confidence of the players. We are close into getting there if one looks at Saturday's performance, the progress is there and all we need to work more on is our attitude. We came back strongly in the second half, but we need to be strong the entire 90 minutes of the match," he said.
Parreira also defended the players he has selected for the match, saying he was perturbed by insinuations that he has selected a B-squad.
"How do you call players like Teko Modise, Benson Mhlongo, Bamuza Sono as weak players, when they play for big clubs in the country. We are building a strong foundation for the future. That means we need to access and evaluate players for the 2008 African Cup of Nations," said Parreira.
The players selected are: Rowen Fernandez, Itumeleng Khune, Vuyo Mere, Bryce Monn, Bevan Fransman, Ashraf Hendricks, Benson Mhlongo, Tseop Masilela, Brent Evans, Ricardo Katza, Brent Carelse, Siphiwe Tshabalala, Kagisho Dikgacoi, Bamuza Sono, Lance Davids, Lebohang Mothibantwa, Bernard Parker, Teko Modise, Lerato Chabangu, Benett Chenene, Thembinkosi Fanteni and Norman Smith.
