Decision on Mabhida today

A decision whether the strike by construction workers at the 2010 Moses Mabhida Stadium would enter its second week, will be announced at midday today.

Employers and the union are expected to make a joint statement, to pave the way for the resumption of the construction of 2010 stadiums around the country.

The decision whether to accept a newly-proposed project bonus offer of more than R500 a month for each worker, would be made by the workers when they meet with the union officials today.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) officials resumed negotiations on Wednesday after the workers took their grievances to the streets.

They marched to the city hall to hand a memorandum to the municipal manager, Michael Sutcliffe

They urged him to intervene in making sure that negotiations go back to the table.

NUM is optimistic about the new offer saying the decision on whether to continue with the strike would be left to the workers after consultation.

NUM's Bonginkosi Mncwabe said they were able to negotiate another offer, which is more than R500.

"One of the conditions that comes with this offer is that we have to enter into an agreement not to be involved in another strike action again until the project is completed in 2009," said Mncwabe.
