Police in Limpopo have shown beyond any reasonable doubt that no one is above the law when they arrested a fellow colleague for theft.
The Waterval police arrested Inspector John Hlongwane, 42, on Thursday last week in connection with a case of theft by false pretences.
Hlongwane, who is attached to Waterval police station, was reportedly investigating a case of housebreaking allegedly committed by a male suspect who lives in Mpheni village.
The suspect was arrested but later released on free bail by the court. On hearing that the suspect was out on free bail, Hlongwane allegedly went to the suspect's house where he found the suspect's mother. Hlongwane allegedly demanded R1000 from her which he claimed would be used towards her son's bail, said police spokesman Superintendent Mohale Ramatseba.
"However, the woman could not raise the required amount but managed to offer Hlongwane R300," he said.
Ramatseba said the victim later blew the whistle about the money. Police investigations were launched, culminating in Hlongwane's arrest. He was granted R2000 bail and will appear again in the Waterval magistrate's court today.
Hlongwane's arrest comes barely two weeks after another police inspector from the same police station was arrested for theft.
Inspector Philemon Mukwevho, also 42 years old, was arrested after he was linked to withdrawals of R5000 from the account of a teacher who was knocked down in a hit-and-run accident last month.
His case was postponed to December 7 for further investigation.
