Athletics Gauteng North has announced a team of 124 athletes for the Interprovincial Track and Field Championships, which will take place in Germiston tomorrow.

The primary and sub-youth athletics championships, aimed at athletes under the age of 15 years, will also feature Central Gauteng and Athletics Vaal Triangle.

"We expect them [athletes] to gain as much experience as possible, and get to know what it feels like to wear their provincial colors. We also use these kinds of championships to keep track of athletes' progress," said AGN development officer Jappie Modibane.

There has always been a shortage of black children in field events, but Modibane says the situation is slowly improving.

"The rise of 17-year-old long and triple jumper Boipelo Motlhatlhego, who has been making a name for herself recently, has shown them they are also capable of doing well in field events."

Modibane also mentioned other rising stars in long jump and triple jump, medal hopefuls such as Randy Ngoepe, Karabo Mashiane and Surprise Mogane.

The event takes place at the Germiston Athletics Stadium from 9am.
