Three held over killing of couple

Three Umlazi, Durban, men have been arrested in connection with the double murder of the elderly owners of a popular Wartburg hotel, police said yesterday.

Three Umlazi, Durban, men have been arrested in connection with the double murder of the elderly owners of a popular Wartburg hotel, police said yesterday.

Police spokesman Superintendent Henry Budhram said a 33-year-old man was the first to be arrested on Wednesday by a KwaZulu-Natal provincial crime intelligence project team.

The other two men - aged 37 and 40 - were arrested yesterday in Umlazi, Budram said.

"During their arrest, two licensed 9mm pistols and an unlicensed .38 special revolver were recovered," he added.

The elderly couple were gunned down on November 7 at their Wartburger Hof Hotel, about 40km from Pietermaritzburg.

Hotelier Siggi Schaedle, 68, and his wife Ingrid, 63, were working in their hotel when an armed man allegedly entered the premises after 10pm.

Police said that a chef at the hotel heard screaming in the reception area and saw a "well-built man" armed with a gun walking towards Ingrid - who was standing behind the reception counter.

The gunman allegedly shot Ingrid before proceeding to the lounge, where he apparently fired several shots at her husband before fleeing.

A bullet had struck Ingrid in the left shoulder while her husband had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his chest.

The couple were declared dead at the scene.

Apparently nothing was taken from the scene.

"We expect to make further arrests soon. Our investigations are continuing," said Budhram.

The three men were expected to appear in the New Hanover magistrate's court soon, Budram said. - Sapa
